The identification and research of an unknown 17th.c. shipwreck

Cornwall, England.

Cove known as "Dollar Cove", adjacent to the Church of St. Winwalloe, Lizard peninsula, Cornwall.

Date

From July 1971 to end of 2002.

Discovery

Prime mover of the project to research and identify this, at the time, totally unknown shipwreck site.

Research and rescue.

The early investigation included the removal of wreck material likely to be damaged or totally lost in storms. Fortunately, one object removed proved to be diagnostic of the probable date of the shipwreck.

Finding the substantial remains of an early shipwreck in 1971 was clearly only the start of a mission that lasted nearly 30 years. Unfortunately, the shifting sands which had partially protected it over centuries, were also the bugbear dogging its identification. Most years the site was covered.
